Als Konsequenz führt das Medikament zur Kontraktion der Gefäße und Kontraktion des Gastrointestinaltrakt sowie andere gynäkologischen Organe.
Terlipressin ist ein synthetisches Analogon von Vasopressin. Es wird bei Komplikationen der fortgeschrittnen Leberzirrhose eingesetzt. Dabei wird durch gefäßverengende Wirkung eine Erhöhung des systemischen Gefäßwiderstandes augeslöst. DerPfortaderdruck und damit das Risiko der Ösophagusvarizenblutung wird vermindert. Es gibt zudem Hinweise, dass sein Einsatz auch beim septischen Schock oder nachReanimationsbehandlung, besonders aber bei schweren Hypotonien vorteilhaft sein kann. Nachteilig wirkt das Medikament auf die Nierenfunktion.
